Subtle Structures
in Painting

art residency at Villa Sonnenberg

The aim of this period of artistic practice was to integrate the world of digital 3D graphics with the poetic character of handmade drawings and watercolor paintings.

The motive of this project is the human and nature, framed within a cycle of nine—based on numerological ideas of cyclicality, yet describing a universal rhythm of life.

In this event, shapes exist in a space that is slightly uncanny, yet also liberating and peaceful — where forms evolve over time, and the act of transition itself becomes what shapes them and gives them meaning.

Each number, each piece considered in sequence, represents a phase, particular ideas, and an intuitive feeling of a moment within the cycle. One is the beginning, nine — the end. Two relates to the awareness of others, three — to creation. Four represents work and a stable foundation, growing slowly but reliably like a tree. Five stands in the middle, looking almost jealously toward both the beginning and the end, seeking freedom. Six is the first number capable of building with mature awareness, as it is also the beginning of the second half. Seven realizes the value of awareness itself. Eight is connected to matter, power, and endurance. Finally, nine can look back at all of this, understanding the character of each step along the path. Each number can be seen from different perspectives and can take on different forms. For example, three carries lightness and creativity — yet at the same time, it feels like something imbalanced, when forced to divide between two people. Similarly, although number one is ready to initiate the entire sequence, behind this bravura there is always a need to stand firmly on one’s own ground – as one.

The visual language is based on means taken from the world of human shapes, simplified for the needs of low performance computer graphics.

It is a handmade continuation (or an internal event) within the “Bearing Shapes” project, which assumes life existing purely in a world of geometric structures.

This world treats shapes metaphorically – as a result of thoughts, emotions and situations. Attempt of translating this language to the language of drawings and painting is full of interveaving the gesture, space and matter of paint with ideas of digital effects and simplified attitude to layering and color.
